B12 - Last Days of Silence Review

This year B12 make their return after disappearing from the scene so suddenly back in 1996. Back then the duo’s sound was mistaken for coming from the Detroit underground but in fact was they were completely home grown. Signed to the infamous Warp records B12 were making a name for themselves through the early 90s up until ’96 when with a test pressing for their new album B1215 ready they suddenly departed with out a trace. Spurred by circulating old material through poor quality bootlegs and a sold out live show in 2005, B12 decided to fly the flag again through remastering old material for release but more importantly producing new material.

Last Days of Silence is the result and delivers a combination of electronic epic melodies over industrial percussion. You can really hear the Detroit influence throughout this album with the various dark soundscapes. There are some interesting tracks on this album, Hail of Mirror’s epic strings make it such an apt intro record for the album but also anyone’s DJ set. Whilst More Than One has a particularly old skool Detroit feel with its 303 percussion and swirling electronic synths. Don’t Be Afraid seems particularly evil as its angry melodies and broken beat slowly breathes out a dark sound. Another favourite is Static Glitch, it uses intensifying loops to create a scatty mess of beats and glitchy electronic sounds.

In addition to the interesting there are some different tracks too, such as Beyond Reason with its glitchy mechanical rhythms and Ashamed of Me with syncopated cymbals and haunting strings. I wouldn’t say they’re danceable but they are intriguing. More dancefloor accessible tracks can be found on 32 Lineup and Slope which take up a usual techno stance.

Whilst there are some interesting elements on this album I find some of the safer dancefloor material a bit run of the mill and maybe a tad dated in its sound. The live show should prove interesting whether the whole album could keep a crowd entertained. For the avid electronica and techno fans of yesterday I’m sure this album will be much loved but for the kids of today which were watching ninja fighting turtles through the 90s I reckon they will want something more. 5/10

Audiomatique 2.1 Review

Adultnapper brings us his latest mix in the form of his Audiomatique Vol.2 compilation. So in conjunction with this release they’ve put some of the tracks he used on a nice little sampler EP.

The Viewer – Street Horn
This track is brilliant. It is an epic movement of sound laced with interesting snippets of flute and string melodies over a hypnotic restrained beat and two tone bassline. This gives the track an sense of held back urgency if there is such a thing. Its quite similar in style to Ilario Alicante’s recent Vacaciones En Chile or Djuma Soundsystem’s Les Djinns so its definitely not for the peak time techno floors. But if you like your epic Trentmoller sounds then this is definitely up your street.

Robert Babicz - White Storm
In Robert Babicz’s White Storm a trickle of chimes flows over a big throbbing bassline as it hypnotises you through its swirling manner. It combines a big room sound with the more intricate detailing of the more minimal tracks out there. It seems to work quite well as it seems mellow yet moving. For the DJs out there it’s a bit of a bugger to mix as it’s got a beatless intro and outro so takes a bit of thinking on how to smoothly drop in such a delicate tune. I like this track but I reckon a remix with a different set of basslines would defo tickle my fancy more.

Joel Mull – Red Light of Dawn
Red light of Dawn has a distinct techno feel to it as it progressively builds to a flourishingly warm breakdown… where the subtle two tone electronic string which moves in and out so gently in the build up comes straight to the forefront. This track is epic and for anyone on their pill honeymoon this is sure to reach for those lasers like we once did back in 99.

Mikael Jonasson – Rainy Sunny
Rainy Sunny is a fair track, stuck between big room electro house or techno, I can’t quite decide. Its got all the right elements of both and the only way I can describe it is that its something Sven Vath would play. It has the signature electro bassline and noises and is pretty much tub thumping. If you like that then this ticks all the boxes and will no doubt be filling floors from erm Paris to Berlin?

20 Years of The Sub Club by Sub Culture and Optimo Review

The Sub Club is Glasgow and Scotland’s Mecca to the underground. Evolving from ancient times, 1987 is ancient in terms of house, the Sub Club has played spectacle and weathered the ever changing landscape of dance music to still stay one of the best clubs of Scotland and the UK. I myself have never been in the 20 years of my 23 that it has existed but I have heard nothing but good words from Scottish friends and acquaintances. If I get over the grim Trainspotting images of crazed wielding Robbie Carlyles and smack injecting Ewan McGregors, then the Sub Club will be the first place I visit in the land of the Scots.

This CD is spread over 2 discs mixed by the long standing residents Sub Culture and Optimo. CD 1 by Sub Culture chronicles the different sounds of house and techno that have passed through the Sub Culture nights. Timeless tracks have been selected to produce a great mix, side stepping genres and the need to be upfront allowing the quality of great music to shine through. It meanders back in time hitting great tracks such as Carl Craig’s epic Mind of a Machine, Derrick May and Stacey Pullen’s mix of Wiggin, Soul Center II’s percussive Psycho Set, Code 6’s piano roller Quad 2, Jimmy Bo Horne’s Spank and Galaxy 2 Galaxy’s Jupiter Jazz.

I’ve listened to a few “history of house and techno” compilations and more often than not they tend to sound corny due to a dated sound. I know that’s contradictory with them being history compilations which generally tend to include old tracks, but some times old tracks are supposed to stay in the past. Its why Sasha and Digweed re-released The Mix Collection and took out all the cheesey M People piano house giving the CD a fresher sound. This CD follows in the similar vein. Sub Culture achieved what they set out to do, which is mix timeless tracks from dance music’s history. And the reasons I like it is because I can still appreciate the tracks with out the pre-requisite of 90s nostalgia which is where the other CDs go wrong for me.

CD 2 showcases the sounds of Optimo and their Sunday shindigs which have notched up over 10 years of service. The second CD goes through what you’d expect from Optimo, down tempo driving beats stopping off everywhere from disco, house and funk right through to techno, punk and acid. It truly is a unique sound that’s edgy, hip and cool, something that very few can pull off.

Stand out tracks on this CD have to be the short blast of Jeff Mills The Bells wound down to set the tempo, Luke Vibert’s acid tweak monster Asheed, Beat Conductor’s Moroccan influenced Marrakech, Ruth’s disco punk Polaroid/Roman/Photo, Lindstrom and Prins Thomas’ epic piano tinged Might Girl, Linkwood Family’s funk oozing Piece of Mind and Junior Byron’s Dance to the Music. It’s the variety and diversity which makes this CD so enjoyable to listen to and probably the more favoured of the two discs for me.

As a whole this CD combo makes it a keeper. Built on quality its been educational with both CDs showing me sounds from back in time within genres I reside in as well as sounds from genres across the board. Its educational without being cheesey, obvious or boring. The folks down at the national curriculum should take a leaf out the Sub Club’s book. 9/10

Mark Farina Fabric 40 Review

Recent Fabric quality has been on another level. Bug, MANDY and Pearson explored the popular sound of now whilst the other month Robert Hood blasted his way though your senses with his refreshing take on the minimal techno sound. This month Fabric flips the series on its head with Mark Farina approaching the CD series from the other end of the dance music spectrum. Like that timeless bit of art deco furniture round your Nan’s, Mark Farina is a timeless piece of furniture of the Chicago/US house. Farina is house and this release is the epitome of house in the form of a reflective plastic disc.

I have to say this CD makes you wiggle and bop from the very first beat to the last traversing the US house sound from the deep and jazzy right through to the jacking and acid. Like the Robert Hood CD this is a refreshing change from the usual Fabric Room 1 sound. Although refreshing Farina flies in from a completely different angle to Hood, laying down chunky beats, laidback grooves with plenty of funk. The CD just oozes summer time and no better time than the present for this CD to come out. Well Fabric First members would have had the recent mini heat wave to enjoy the CD with but unfortunately normal shoppers on the release week have a plenty of rain ahead. Maybe this CD will help the listener transport to warm climes?

The CD kicks off upbeat with a classic Chi Town vibe with Giom’s Together and JT Donaldson’s Why not Rock? It’s also good to see the Inland Knights on this CD representing the Nottingham/UK scene. I’ve found the Knights have always managed to find the right balance between deep and jacking. Their track “Where Ya At?” acts as a pivotal point as it kicks back into a laidback lounge sound as the round basslines suspend the listener in a hammock of dubby beats and warm synth lines. Johnny Fiasco’s Last Word adds a jazz element as you swirl around the wash of soulful mellow rhythms and melodies.

James Curd’s Pick Up What I’m Putting Down launches the listener out of their hammock as Farina makes his final onslaught to finish the CD on a high. Farina begins to lay down the future sound of house with some abstract sounds, strange samples and quirky acid lines. Carter’s mix of Make Dat Shit, Sneak’s Mumbler and Farina’s Das Shihaya an interesting take on Kraftwerk’s Trans Europe Express squelches and crunches its way through the final furlong of frenzied peak time.

Personally I do love this CD, my only minor gripe is that I wished Farina had released the peak time abstract sounds a little earlier as the last 20 minutes or so of the CD I enjoyed the most; granted this is coming from an electronic minimal house and techno lover. To the die hard Chicago/Deep house follower this CD might not upfront or groundbreaking. I for one can’t comment in that respect as my exposure to this genre isn’t what it used to be. But in terms of the Fabric series and what I’ve been listening to recently this CD is fun and interesting with a particular knack to make you move. With the summer sunshine now here this CD is a must. 8/10

Holy Schmokes! which festival to do? too many options? Do i go abroad? do i stay here? Well i'm not going to help you with this post. Nope i'm just here to tell you what else has been added to make it even harder to decide.

Firstly, our friends at Sonar have decided to add more. If the Richie Hawtin/M-Nus 10th Birthday showcase wasn't enough, they've only gone and added everyone's favourite Chilean Ricardo Villalobos, deep disher Dubfire and Efdemin! Also Soulwax have been added as part of their "Weekend Never Dies"/"Most of the Remixes" tour. A bit closer to home Renaissance are pulling out all the stops on their third attempt on UK festival Wild in the Country. They've got a M-Nus arena with Hawtin, they've got Sasha, they've got Tenaglia and 2ManyDjs. All the big guns are there, plus some big names in small letters such as Carl Craig, MANDY, Ame and Dixon. And to top it there are a load of bands which have 'The' at the start of their names which are probably massive on the nu-rave skins house party circuit. This year's live headliner comes in a tiny little Icelandic package called Bjork whos been getting rave reviews currently, take a look for yourself. So if you're gonna go to a UK festival Wild in the Country is my recommendation. Apart from the rain last year the festival was spot on. Cocoon @ The Warehouse Project Competition

These days bank holidays = warehouse rave, be it London, Leeds, Manchester or Birmingham all have their own little warehouse space for you to belittle the weekend away. Our pick of the bunch for the forthcoming May bank holiday is of course the Warehouse Project in Manchester. They’ve been doing these shindigs for well over two years now so have got the whole thing running smoothly. The Sub Level Sessions popped up for the Sasha gig last December and had a right old knees up! This May bank holiday looks set to provide some great entertainment. Friday see’s the Soulwax gang back in town yet again; seems people just can’t get enough of their eclectic electronic rock fusion sound. The Sunday sees a medley of drum n bass, hip hop and dubstep with the likes of Roni Size and Skream reverberating those bassbins and DJ Yoda will also be attacking your audio visual senses with his Magic Cinema Show. Obviously here at The Sub Level Sessions we have a penchant for techno, which is why Saturday’s Cocoon night looks particularly good. On the bill is everyone’s favourite Chillean wreck head Ricardo Villalobos alongside long time techno hero Josh Wink. And to top it off young upstart Raresh is on warm up duties, truly a magnificent line-up in one of Manchester’s best venue. Its so good we’re gonna give one lucky winner a pair of tickets!

Singles Reviewed: Samim - The Lick, King Unique - Hinode, Subb-an - Corridors EP and Itmar Sagi - Black Gold

Samim - The Lick
Samim divided opinion last year with his summer gypsy house hit heater with unexpected plays from claude von stroke right through to jo wiley. Some loved its quirky fun sampling which caused them to do hybrid folk/square/gypsy dances. Others hated the track also for the quirky accordion sample which made people do silly hybrid folk/square/gypsy dances. Either way it brought Samim to everyone’s attention. His follow up or more so the next track he’s releasing is also another quirky one. It takes on a wobbly breakbeat with some Justin Timberlake style lyrics. In fact this track could pass for some kind of Justin Timberlake/Missy Elliot collaboration. As it shifts from its starting breakbeat rhythm to a house friendly 4/4, elements of bollywood percussion and strings filter through. It’s a strange combination, but it seems to work. I can’t imagine the Berlin elite playing this, but I can see the likes of Mehdi et al dropping its quirky rhythms.

If quirky hip house vocals aint you’re thing, then Derrick Carter is here to save the day. He pumps the track up full of chi-town boompty, placing itself somewhere between the Chicago jacking and the fidget sound that Switch pounds out. Derrick cuts and chops the samples up and rearranges them in a haphazard order which creates a bum shaking groove. For those that don’t like the full on hip house vocals, there is a dub which dials down on the words. So everyone can be pleased. Well apart from the deep house and minimal fans. But the Carter mix is full of so much energy you can’t help but love it. 7.5/10

King unique – Hinode

This is the first I’ve heard from King Unique since their days on the old Junior label. These days the
boys have been putting their tracks out on their own label Curfew with Hinode being the 8^th release.
Hinode is a mix of epic synth sweeps combined with your typical crunchy electro minimal sound. The only description that comes to mind about this track is a poor mans Holden remix of The Sky Was Pink. It is nearly identical in its elements, yet King Unique fail to execute correctly. The beat structure just seems run of the mill, whilst the sweeping synths build to a quite corny faithless trance high. Fergie has a fair attempt at salvaging the package with his techno roller which has plenty of groove and fidget to make any dancefloor move. However this track lacks identity with its typical fidgety minimal techno shuffle. It will rock the floors but will most likely be swept away in the wash of all the other “minimal” tracks out there. 5/10

Subb-an – corridors ep

You’d have thought Subb-an and his Corridors EP would be hailing from on the pulse Berlin, but in fact the young whippersnapper is hailing all the way from Birmingham of all places. How is this possible you might ask? Birmingham is full of trendy mullets, a penchant for the funkiest of funky house and was once the epicentre of all things hard house. Well for the best part you’d be right, but away from the vomit lined gutters of Broad Street lies a party known as Below. Its here where the young Subb-an has been cutting his teeth at Birmingham’s answer to Circo Loco at DC-10.

Corridors is made up of four tracks poking in at the house genre from all sides. Moscow Fighting is a winding moody house track laced with random stabs of a piercing piano. The track slowly progresses with the winding siren synths becoming more and more intense, coupled with the piercing piano through the breaks of the synth makes this track a haunting deep house monster.

Quadroon follows a similar formula to Moscow fighting but flips it round using bright warm synths which shift and phase in over the course of the track leading up to a singular crescendo at the back end. I can really imagine this track slotting nicely into the Below warm up regime during their infamous Birmingham day time BBQs.

The EP is finished off with Poloma another deep house affair which takes a moody approach with its dubby bassline. Unfortunately I find this track quite forgettable out of the lot, yet I can imagine the bassline could really pulsate through a crowd on a larger sound system. It is this bassline that the Ralph Swilinski mix has picked up on, beefing it up and making it angry. The growling bassline dances around a shifting pattern of percussion samples keeping the track simple but strangely infectious with its groove. A great slice of dub tech house if such a genre exists, making this track the standout on the EP. 7/10

Itmar Sagi – Black Gold

Itmar Sagi drops a ballsy Detroit-esque techno track which bubbles synths over a growling bassline. Funk D’Void used this track to kick of his Sci Fi Hi Fi 4 mix and quite rightly so. The track starts ballsy but slowly elevates through a wispy cloudy foreground created by the string synths.

Sammuel L Sessions transforms the track into a techno roller, looping the strings to hypnotise the listener. The loops work creating a dark Fabric room 2 sound which ticks over nicely, but doesn’t provide enough progression to keep it interesting. On the other hand Chymera’s mix is quirky and off beat. Drip feeding you samples of the strings over a dub style break beat before spitting you out the other end in a wash of breathy sweeps.

All three tracks are different with their own take on techno but all three sound fresh; definitely worth a purchase to bring a breath of fresh air to your sets. 8/10

As one door closes on a weekend another one opens…

Four day weeks are akin to a delicious chocolate truffle with a poisonous gooey centre. Last weekend was monstrous 4 evenings of nothing but opportunity to pickle the liver for which I grabbed like some crazed person after those silver tokens in the dome contraption on the crystal maze. Tuesday turned up, I felt horrible but finally got back to reality to find the weekend was on my doorstep once again, urgh, but in a rather superficial “do I have to” way. So to understand the mistake I’m going to make by being back at work next Monday in pain, lets recap how I got there the first time round.

Secret Sundaze @ The Coronet Theatre

Thursday saw the weekend kick off with Secret Sundaze. Usually a staple in the London Sunday clubbing calendar and the one who tends to destroy souls on the weekend decided to opt for the pre-emptive tactic and destroy people before they’d even begun. Thursday night saw them bring another Detroit legend to town in the form of Kevin Saunderson who headlined alongside minimal Berliner Tobi Neumann. Out back in room 2, Italo-Ibizan night Monza entertained us with one third of the Romainian RPR sound system Pedro. Whilst another two rooms of disco and soulful house could be found in the old theatre settings of the Coronet.

Aside from the ridiculous queue to get into the moderately empty building, Secret Sundaze had a good sizeable crowd in attendance. Both the big rooms were packed out with plenty of dress up fun that only Secret Sundaze can do. The music was good in places, but seemed all a bit same old same old at times, the same house and techno that weren’t really going anywhere which seemed to affect the crowd after a while. There were flashes of inspiration and I did have a “laugh” but all in all it just settled into a usual night with average music from both the main and back room with a subdued crowd. I hope Secret Sundaze go back to their formula of small interesting venues with a more select up for it crowd.

M-Nus 10^th Birthday @ Fabric

So the jewel in the weekend crown for most was the M-Nus 10^th Birthday. Presale tickets had sold months in advanced, something unheard of for a Fabric Saturday, so it was pretty obvious that only small oily fish in a tomato based sauce would be comfortable. Undeterred I still went. Come on its Richie Hawtin in room 1 and after missing him at the End and being disappointed for the first time at Lost in July, I needed a good dose of Hawtin magic to restore the faith.

On arrival the queue was pretty lengthy even by Fabric standards. It was visible from Farringdon station which isn’t even that close and round a corner! There were rumours flying round of people being camped out since 7pm! That’s dedication to the cause big time! Luckily I didn’t have to wait too long being on some sort of lengthy list thank god. On the inside it was the usual mix of folk all cramped in moving fluidly round the club. If you got caught in the wrong flow you ended up in the toilet hoping sea rescue were going to pull you out.

Anyways I digress, all this talk of queues and people when I should really be talking about the music, which is easily summed up in one word. BRILLIANT. All rooms were rocking. Great techno all round with a real up for it crowd. It was nice to see Magda playing some decent music again. Last few times she had been really dull. Maybe because she’s made for the warm up slot and peak time sets don’t really do her justice? I dunno. But I do know she was rocking room 1. Marco Carola continued his excellent form in room 2 to a packed out crowd. Again the crowd were electric, people cheering and going nuts. Haven’t seen such enthusiasm since…. Urm the last time Hawtin and the gang were down. Gaiser ripped into Room 1 with his Gaiser sound and an entertaining sound at that. I’m pretty sure he laid down some new stuff too.

So to the main event, Hawtin rolls on at 5am with a planned 5 hour set and my god it was a journey that required seat belts. I couldn’t tell you what he played; all I know is that I was extremely happy at hearing that sound, his sound. OK he did go a bit filter- tastic but every time he did it people would go nuts. So I don’t blame him for massaging his ego watching people go mental at a turn of a knob. I did stay right till the end, however someone left an open hole upstairs on the balcony which I fell down and was lost of the last 2 hours of the night. So here ends the M-Nus report.

Circo Loco @ The End

Bank holidays usually mean a little piece of Ibiza invades the End. Circo Loco tries to re-create the aeroplane flight path terrace magic by having the UK party in an old underground station supplementing the aeroplanes with inflatable ones. But that shouldn’t matter; it’s really about the music!

Like Thursday night it seemed pretty good all round. Good music, good crowd, yet it seemed to lack something, well something in comparison to the mighty M-Nus night which just had it all. It might have been me coming to the end of the line, but there didn’t seem to be the electric atmosphere witnessed the previous night. All the DJs on did a great job, Gavin Herlihy and Dollz at Play working the lounge to great affect and Jose De Divina made mince meat of the main room. Unfortunately I missed Rhadoo, part 2 of the Romanian sound system as I was tucked up in bed!

This Weekend
After all that one would generally want to shoot themselves. But after a few days at work and some second thoughts, it seems like we should wish Mulletover a very happy birthday at Se One this Saturday. And if that’s not enough for you good ol’ Villalobos is tearing Fabric room 1 a hole. Get involved!

The Glimmers – Are Gee Gee Fazzi

The Glimmers, a duo from what must be some indie dance nu rave factory in Ghent Belgium. I say a factory, because nothing can explain why so much talent has come out of this sleepy Belgium town. Soulwax, The Glimmers, urm 2ManyDJs. Ok 2ManyDJs are Soulwax, but hey that’s still 2 massive acts for a small town. Anyways, I’m getting sidetracked. The Glimmers for their album decided to go all Radiohead on us. Well Radiohead and a little bit further. Rather than you deciding whether to buy the album or not, the Glimmers are giving it to you for free if you manage to catch one of their live shows. This just turns the whole CD thing on its head, but by golly I think I could work. You show you support by checking them live and the show their appreciation by giving you their latest album. IT'S ALL OVER!!

That's right. Nightmare as it is, tonight sees the final regular broadcast of the sublevel sessions
on URF.

What a journey it's been for me over the past year and a half and how sad it'll be to say goodbye, but needs must as they say. Many a night out has sprung from the show and from what I can remember, muchos good times (see Richie Hawtin at Fabric c. this time last year).
Not to mention more awesome tunes and quality guest mixes than you could shake stick at.

Great fun all round, but good things must come to an end, and tonight from 8-9 (and as late after as I can possibly drag it), i'll be gracefully bowing out. After a year of mixing it up, throwing electro and even prog into the Sublevel Sesh mix, tonight I'm going back to the it's roots, ending it all with an hour or pure techno, tech house and minimal.

So tune in then, and we'll go out in style. And keep your ears peeled for the possibility of a show of pure Sessions classics, which if I have anything to say about it will be a definite goer.

Ellen Allien Boogybytes Vol.4 Review

The track records for the Boogybytes CD series and Ellen Allien are pretty sparkling so far. For the former Kiki, Sascha Funke and Modeselektor have all produced some excellent mixes whilst Ellen Allien has warped our ears with her mind bending Fabric 34 mix and part delivered the Orchestra of Bubbles album. So sticking the two together should technically produce some grade A listening. That said sticking Gerrard and Lampard together never seemed to work but fear not as Ellen Allien is German, a plucky Berlinette with her own label BPitch Control who also happens to put out the BoogyBytes CD. So being German she’ll probably side step any difficulties, Vorspung Durch Technique and all that, right?

For this CD Ellen takes her trademark weird and trippy route. The haunting eerie soundscapes, bug crawling noises and ambient backgrounds keep this CD interesting throughout. The CD opens with a poem from AGF who also produce’s Ellen’s forthcoming longplayer SOOL. The poem is set to the haunting and ambient sounds we’ve come to expect from Ellen. Followed by Vera’s In The Nook, its sonar style blips lay the bed for Villalobos’ Fizpatrick to take hold. From here the mix progresses through all kinds of tripped out noises enough to send the soberest of people into an acid induced schizophrenia state. Sozadam’s Eye Forlon track just epitomises the whole CD, growling heavy bassline, sparse paranoia inducing sounds and freaky pitched down voices that might once have been your conscience.

Lucio Aquilina Magic M makes an appearance on this CD. Whilst I do like the track I feel it doesn’t seem fit neatly within the whole ethos of the CD. Unlike the Buttrich mix of Music is Improper with its strange electronic sounding sirens and repetitive “music” vocal or the haunting chimes of Gaiser’s Withdrawal. It is the trippyness which makes this CD epic, the different elements and ambience just draws you the listener in on Ellen’s winding journey through dark and misty Prague-esque alleyways. There aren’t any big drops and massive hands in there air moments, its just effortless gliding from track to track making this CD sublime and ideal for that wind down afterparty moment when the walls are melting and conversation is at an abrupt end. Definitely on par with Fabric 34 and it will be interesting to see what her album Sool will bring us. 8/10

Robert Hood Fabric 39 Review

Robert Hood has little to do with Nottingham’s favourite thief Robin Hood, however in terms of legendary status they’re probably on par; well they are if you talk to techno aficionados. One of the founding members of Detroit’s Underground Resistance along with the alien like Jeff Mills and Mad Mike Banks, Robert Hood has been there from the beginning shaping techno into what it is today. Many credit his seminal 1993 release ‘Minimal Nation’ as a pivotal point in techno, laying the blueprint for many to follow and build on. So in short Robert Hood = Legend and unlike Robin Hood, we know he exists.

For Fabric 39, Robert Hood doesn’t hang about, he rifles through 32 tracks with straight up “balls to the wall” techno from the get go. None of this slow building plod, Robert Hood starts as he means to go on… rude, obnoxious and in your face making it quite a refreshing change to the usual polite inoffensive bleeps we’ve become so accustomed to. The CD builds through a combination of Detroit sounding pads and hypnotic loops before it crescendos into Marco Lenzi’s Taboo firing the mix into a frenzy of funk fuelled disco and carnival influenced techno, enough to make even the most discerning techno crusty wiggle like they’re in Rio.

Robert Hood wanted this mix to take the listener on a trip, which I can empathise with, if this trip were on Tom Hank's Castaway raft and Wilson the ball floated away a long time ago. Hood carries you to the crest of every wave through his trademark stripped back loops such as Element 23, UK Gold’s Agent Wood and Pacou’s All It Takes before crashing down into relentless beats and symbol crashes through Scorp's New Energy and John Thomas' Pulp Funktion 2. The CD manoeuvres up and over many waves to shore up on a Hood classic, The Greatest Dancer showing us his version of disco funk.

This CD is relentless, its pumped up on speed and the hypnotic loops suck you right in. The variety in which Hood moves through genres of techno is nothing short of amazing. OK there are some shaky mixes, but it just adds to the rawness and rudeness of this mix. This is techno the Robert Hood way and it is excellent, unpretentious and raw. 9/10

A time where the winter blues have been nearly overcome, a time where the state of your personal finances no longer resembles a blanket of red numbers and negative figures and a time where people plan to plunge back into a sorry state of affairs by planning their summer excursions. Sonar seems like a good idea as always for us at The Sub Level Sessions. This year the 15th Festival falls on the 19th, 20th and 21st June with a line-up which ensembles everything from all corners of the electronic music world. Funk D'Void Sci Fi Hi Fi, I'll Lick Your Spine, Slam Staccato Rave, Silicone Soul and Vector Lovers all Reviewed!

Soma’s been really busy this month providing my ears with plenty of new stuff, so much so I’ve been struggling to listen to it all and think up some words. But I’ve found a bit of time to crawl out of the gutter I had been occupying this Saturday to wax lyrical about Soma’s forthcoming.

Let’s start with the new Hi Fi Sci Fi compilation. Number four in the series is mixed by Scott turned Catalonian Funk D’Void. The bar has been set high, extremely high with his predecessors Ewan Pearson, Luciano and Alex Smoke all churning out sublime mixes. So what could be done do to keep pace or even set the bar higher? Funk D’Void has answered by bringing us a mix using breathy bright melodies and moods to create the energy and progression. This CD stands away from the K fuelled moody and dark but instead we are brought a distinct “happy” and melodic flavour which flies, glides and dives throughout.

On first listen I wasn’t too impressed, my exact thoughts were, “why is he playing this airy fairy shit?” Granted my first listen was during an after party binge where the K fuelled moody and dark fits in quite nicely. So ever the fair gentleman that I am, i gave the CD another go and I can say this CD really comes into its element in the right scenario. This CD is built for the wind down, the chilled out and the laid back. The intricate melodies and sweeps just suit these settings making the listener feel like a clichéd bird flying through the clouds at afternoon sunset. Serious, it really does. Deepness from H Foundation as well as Francois Dubois and Jimpster remixes add great atmosphere, whilst Apparat’s mix of Drip and Artec’s Comunickate applies intensity and edge.

If you listen to this at the right time it can be a great mix, I do wonder if Soma is releasing this bad boy too early as it is perfect for those lazy summer afternoon outside, inside or travelling about. This mix is solid and is definitely up there with the other Sci Fi Hi Fi CDs, but is it better or even the best? Not quite I’m afraid, Ewan Pearson’s and Alex Smoke’s efforts still pip it for me. However this is still a great effort and a breath of fresh air from Funk D’Void. 7/10

Lets Go Outside - I'll Lick Your Spine Mixes
Next up are the new remixes from Lets Go Outside and their track I’ll Lick Your Spine. The original was a brilliant. It was a strange and eerie work out with a very breaky feel to it, one thing that I was sure of was that it was made to make you freakout which subsequently meant it featured a lot in my record box for most of last year. For the new year the remixes come from Massi DL and Ivan Smagghe with Tim Paris as well as the original mix from Repeat Repeat. Massi DL reshapes the track into a more familiar techno form using the breathy vocals and synth stabs from the original. It is very typical sounding, but it is done well and there is no doubt it will definitely work the floor nicely.

Smagghe and Paris dish up a bass driven hip shaker of a remix. Their bassline adds an element of groove whilst still retaining some of the original acid stabs and vocals. There is a nice slow burn feel about this mix as it slowly intensifies with the use of a haunting synth. Great work from the pair. 8/10

Slam - Staccato Rave
The other release I’ve listened to recently from Soma has been from the label’s head honchos Slam. This is the single release for Staccato Rave which featured on their album Human Response last year. With the original comes mixes from Adam Beyer and Silicone Soul. Adam Beyer does what he does best and applies his style of techno, adding some intricate 909 percussion with a big rolling techno bassline whilst keeping the original computerized synth noises. Balls to the wall techno as I once heard from somewhere!

Silicone Soul adds two remixes. Their darkroom dub has a classic tribal workout on the percussion with the computer synth sounds being used to slowly layer up the intensity of the track. This mix is probably my favourite out of the lot. The Hypno House mix is a friendlier mix for I guess the “electro” house floors out there. I can see this remix slotting in easily but still standing out from the run of the mill. 7.5/10

Silicone Soul - Darkroom Dub Remixes
Whilst on the subject of Silicone Soul, they released new remixes of their darkroom dubs. The standout track on this release is definitely the Fearmakers Darkroom Dub. Rolling basslines with pounding beats make it a heads down bleeped out mover, moving away from Silicone Soul’s typical brighter production style. The Hikihiki Shake is also worth a punt. 7/10

Vector Lovers - Raumklang
And finally. Vector Lovers and his Raumklang release. Stand out tracks on this release is Derailleur’s Submission mix of Dusk Panorama and Little Plastic Figures. Derailleur’s mix is a great acid work out with classic acid squelches riding throughout and spacey pads give it its uniqueness. Little Plastic Figures pushes a round evil bass from the get go alongside pumping kick drums and intermittent echoes of haunting synths. Making it a nice dark little number. 6/10

DJ Craze: FabricLive 38 Review

DJ Craze, possibly one of the greatest turntablists ever to grace the DMC decks and the only one to win the world title three times in a row. With such an impressive introduction sentence attached to your name, comes great expectations. Here on the Sub Level Sessions we don’t venture into hip hop land too much, but this is a special occasion. As a DJ growing up I would idolise DJ Craze as he wiped the floor at the DMC with his inhumane turntablist moves. It was him (well him and the Eygptian Lover who said “What is a DJ, if he can’t scratch”) that inspired me to poorly pretend to scratch for hours in my bedroom and then unleash it on the public much to my embarrassment. But public health hazards aside, Craze is probably best known in clubs for his drum n bass. I’ve always enjoyed his drum n bass sets on the numerous occasions I’ve seen them, however usually what I enjoy most is the little routine he’ll do at the start and end, which is why I’m glad this CD isn’t a straight up DnB mix like his nexxsounds CD. Instead it’s a mix of hip hop, house, old skool electro, Balitmore/Miami bass and a load more genres mentioned in the press release that I’ve never even heard of. But most important of all there is a nice smattering of turntablism.

In true hip hop style the CD opens in a blaze of beats and scratching with the essential customised MC intro before settling down with the sparse moody pulsating beats of Cool Kids, nicely setting the scene for rude bwoy head nods and hand movements. Merely 12 minutes in and Craze is stepping up the tempo into some Tuff Crew old skool breaks sprinkled with sharp scratches, lifting the mix out from the moodiness, transporting the listener back in time through the 90s and into the 80s with Jan Hammer’s Miami Vice theme. Only Craze can transport one from spitting lyrics round a burning oil drum on 8 mile in rainy Detroit to sunshine, bright coloured suit jackets and mullets in Miami via a Brooklyn bloc party in just 3 records. From here the CD takes on this retro, electro Miami sound that DJ Craze has been trying to achieve. Think Spinbad, Sinden and Medhi with less emphasis on the mash up and more on that 80s Miami sound. Be it the retro synth sounds or the 80s drum hits on tracks like the Beat Club’s Security.

Craze balances this CD perfectly with the right amount of old skool, 80s synth sounds, freestyles, booty basses and heavy beats for the most. However the impeccable running is tarnished just once, but tarnished deep like an angry driver and a set of keys with their car blocked in. Only Craze and God knows why he included Armand Van Helden’s chart fodder "I Want Your Soul". The mix in struggles to stay a float as it sounds just plain awkward after Earth Wind and Fire’s Brazilian Rhyme and disjointed going into Debbie Deb. I can see why Craze might have thought this track would fit, its modern take on a 80s sound encapsulated in a house rhythm could have worked well with the tracks preceding and following. But it just doesn’t, firstly it sounds out of place and secondly it tries to be retro rather than being retro. Maybe ten years down the line Armand’s track could snuggle in if it ever reached that classic retro status, but something tells me it just won’t. Craze would have been better off dropping a true disco classic or even better bypassing straight through to Debbie Deb When I Hear Music.

Every time the CD comes to pass I Want Your Soul, I get this horrible cringe feeling only ever felt when David Brent is trying to dig himself out of some racist or disabled passing comment, causing me to fast forward past. And it’s this which makes it such a shame because the greatest CDs are those which you can listen to unadulterated. There were some great scratches and subtle turntablism moments peppered across the mix which added so much, although I felt a small scratch routine at the end would have satisfied the die hard turntablist fans yearning for a 60 minute long DMC routine. That said this CD is definitely worth a buy; the old skool breaks and booty bass will definitely put a smile on your face. And for the DJs out there when you listen on your ipod with your eyes closed you can almost imagine what it would be like to be a three times DMC World champion as you pretend to air scratch your hands to DJ Craze.

Where were we??

Anyone who tried to tune into what promised to be a brilliant show on Friday night will have been greated with silence. Big sorrys from me at the Sublevel Sessions. Tunes were lined up, a great mix was on the cards, but I ended up decidedly out of action.
Moral of the story; don't confuse an out of the ordinary, post spangled hangover, crossed with the morning after affects of the traditional January gym rush with a Heart Attack and you too might stay out of hospital.

Normal service will indeed resume this Friday (25th) at 8pm ....... that's a promise!

Expect a healthy dose of huge new tunes and a nice chunk of the new minimalistic mix from our very own Chris Wan.

Yes Yes Yes, where does the time go?? Fresh off the back of a crimbo / new years break that would go down in memory as one of the most hectic and debauched yet, if only we could remember it, the sublevel sessions is back on the air!!! Indeed, for what may be it's last outing, the next ten weeks are gonna see more great new tunes, hot interviews and even hotter mixes than you can shake a glow stick at (if that's your thing).

In the pipeline, awesome music from; Sasha, Chris Liebing and Mark Mendes to name but a few. A very special mix and interview (all the way from OZ) from the legendary, and Get Physical head honchos, M.A.N.D.Y. And it all kicks off tomorrow night at 8 with a big slice of dirty, rotten dubstep from big boys on scene, Caspa and Rusko.

Diggers and Xmas Debauchery

Just when you've got over the last weekend the next one is already around the corner to hammer a few more nails into your coffin. We're coming ever closer to that final nail of new years eve but before that happens there is still one more weekend to go.

But first off, last weekend. The Manchester Warehouse Project rocked my socks last Friday night. I'm sad that I only got to see the venue once this year as I think it was a big improvement on the old Boddingtons factory. The Piccadily station location was more intimate and held a better sound. OK when it was busy it was slightly annoying, but these days busy tends to equate to a better atmosphere and you're either on it with the rest or miserable at the sides. My only advice is to just go with the flow, obviously you can consume a variety of substances to ease you into the mood, say like 6 cans of Red Stripe on a long train journey. That worked a treat for me, plus the beer jacket kept me warm... Its cold up north, which I found out once again. On arrival to the venue, Mr Zabiela didnt really seem to be feeling the cold, his blend of tech house and electronic noises with a dash of efx wizardry (note only a dash) kept the man bouncing and the rammed to the rafters warehouse. The man like Sasha followed and i must say i was impressed. There's so much talk of how the man has lost it and his ableton thing is boring, but the other Friday i really enjoyed his set. However, i am a relatively young clubber, so missed the Sasha late 90's golden era. Which on the flip side might be a good thing as I had no pre-conceptions of what he should be like, I just took the set for what it was. The man like, moved effortlessly through epic prog rollers through to dark dirty electronic grooves and even threw in a smattering of techno near the end. It kept me moving until the end and many other people. The only downside to the whole night was having to get home. It took me 4 hours through a combination of taxis, trains and tube. One thing i dont understand is, who in their right minds would want to go to Milton Keynes, Coventry and Watford? There is no need for my train to stop at these places! Well that's what I was thinking after 2 hours into my journey at 11am in the morning feeling extremely on the edge of oblivion.

Saturday brought the delight of Fabric and a little Chilean. Unfortunately, the little Chilean had some family problems so couldn't make it. Hope everything is alright... But I was really disappointed that Luciano couldn't make an appearance. I was really looking forward to hearing his current standard set of Subliminal back catalog records, Freaks come out and that rose rouge remix. I know his sets haven't changed much since May, but I'm still yet to hear it on a sound system like Fabric's. I caught a bit at Wild in the Country, but the flooded tent, torrential rain, lack of crowd, early set time and quiet sound system didn't really do it the greatest of justice. I guess I'll just have to hold on a few more months :o( . Not to worry as Amé and Adam Beyer were still playing, which doesn't make it a complete lost cause. Far from it actually. Amé played some lavish deep sounds in room 3 whilst Adam Beyer and the real "Swedish Mafia" played some stern techno that would send Angello and co back under their electro gash rock. Some good music all around, however the spirit seemed a bit lacking and flat at times. However like I stated before you're either going with the flow or miserable at the sides and after my miserable train journey back during the morning I might have fallen into the latter category.

Now that's all behind me, its time to talk about this weekend. And once again I'm going to talk about what seems like my Siamese twin separated at birth. That's right, I'm heading to Fabric..... again.... But all for good reason, as its part two of London's prog grandmaster's series. Well that's what I'm calling it. John Digweed rolls into town so soon after Sasha just departed. The Dougal from Magic Roundabout look-a-like (see picture above, i think its only a hair thing really..) will be commanding Room1 this weekend, expect some relentless epic prog, tech house. Martinez are in support and should entertain with their brand of intertwined epic dark melodies which plod along in a nice groove. Just what the doctor ordered, before a week of heavy eating, Christmas songs and mince pies.

M.A.N.D.Y Fabric:38 Review

The last few Fabric releases have been pretty star studded. Pokerflat head honcho Steve Bug compiled the last one, Villalobos did an artist DJ hybrid release and before them Ewan Pearson and Ellen Allien. The trend continues this January in the form of M.A.N.D.Y. Despite having quite an annoying name to type, the Berlin duo has been at the forefront of the ongoing “German” trend for over the past 4 years. Their co-owned label Get Physical has had a meteoric rise in popularity, not to mention the numerous releases and remixes they’ve produced on their own and with label mates Booka Shade. And the last time M.A.N.D.Y put tracks to CD for a compilation back in 2006, I saluted as they brought together techno and house in a percussive, funk fuelled and eclectic manner over two CDs for the At The Controls series. So I and probably many others were intrigued to see how M.A.N.D.Y would fill one single CD.

After a bizarre bananas based intro the duo fall into the atmospheric and eerie Darkslide by Minz, setting the scene for a mix of dark electronic grooves. The mix shifts into some bright percussion before dropping into the driving, melodic tones of the Crowdpleaser mix of Quarion’s Karasu . The CD continues to twist and turn along a road of sinister grooves and eerie haunted synth stabs, always continually building. M.A.N.D.Y do an excellent job of bringing the mix in to many crescendo points making the listener expect a step up in gear but instead is teased like a kitten with string.

Rewards are reaped with the fantastic Magic M by Lucio Aquilina whose intricate chimes move the mix into the next phase of dark pulsing grooves and futuristic melodies. Again the mix just continues to shift and glide through these different moods arriving at a glimpse of Robag Wruhme’s Dopamine followed by the glitchy but not twitchy Claude Von Stroke mix of War Paint before moving on with its urging groove. The mix plateaus out into a wash of bright pads and strings through Sebo K & Metro’s take on Tunnels and Julian Ganzer’s funk driven mix of 2 Fast 4 U, which completes the mix and for some reason conjures up images in my mind of Disney’s 1933 animation, Father Noah’s Ark.

Imagery aside, this mix is great. Its dark driving groove throughout makes a night time drive or walk home seem epic. If you like the dark and sinister stripped back grooves, then this CD is definitely a recommended buy. M.A.N.D.Y do an excellent job creating an atmospheric mix and whilst I still think their At The Controls CD is better, this effort is not far off from that. 8/10

The Weekend is Nearly Upon Us!!

The weekend is finally here and the feeling of Christmas keeps creeping in. Expect packed shops, crazy shoppers, overly happy people and repetitive Christmas songs. However there is always the plus side to Christmas, work parties with free booze and a whole hamper of parties from now until the New Year with plenty of debauchery involved. To me this weekend kicks all of that off. The work xmas party is tonight, which is then followed by two monstrous weekend outings.

Saturday in London see’s a massive lineup at Fabric, with everyone’s favourite pint sized Chilean Luciano commanding the main room. Amé are providing some deep stylings in room 3 and room 2 welcomes a Swedish techno invasion with Adam Beyer at the helm. If that doesn’t tickle your taste buds, then Renaissance at The Ministry of Sound might well do. Having had their last outing at The Cross the other week, Renaissance try their hand at rocking the MOS. To do so, they’ve brought in a DJ just as old as the brand. That is of course Sasha..

But for all you people up north that cant make it down here, there is a similar calibre of line-up. The people at the Warehouse Project have the man like Sasha with James Zabiela and Martin Buttrich playing this Friday, so expect carnage in the rave in a cave under the station! Tickets have sold out for this event, so get there early to see if there are any door tickets for those who didn’t manage to get one…. Well all those but the person who won our third and final ticket giveaway.

The entries have been collected and much amusement was had over the optional answers given. It appears that the general public consensus believe that the older, wiser Sasha would ‘ave Zabiela in a scrap, with a consistent theme of long hair being an issue for the young DJ. Anyways I digess! My how the months have passed… It seemed like only yesterday when I was harping on about the Warehouse Project…. Now it’s dark, cold and wet, people are talking about Christmas shopping and what to do for New Years Eve, and it’s the last Warehouse Project event before the New Year festivities, which ultimately means our last ticket giveaway… We hope you have enjoyed our coverage, with guest mixes on the show from Marco Carola, Sasha and James Zabiela, plus all the tickets we’ve given away. So for our final competition, we’ll be giving away a pair of tickets for the 14^th Decemeber, which plays host to two of clubland’s most well known DJs.

If he played hip hop and wore gold chains with a retro 80’s Addidas tracksuit, we might have called him Grandmaster Sasha, but he don’t, so he’s just errrrm, Sasha, but that doesn’t detract from the fact he is a master of the DJ circuit and clubland and sure enough he will be reverberating the Warehouse walls with his raisin maven ableton contraption show thing.

Dalek lover, James Zabiela the once apprentice/student will feature alongside his former master, unfortunately not for a classic kung fu movie student-teacher fight off, but more so to blind us with one of his renowned decks and efxs trickery sets that has made him one of the last true pure DJs.

In addition to these DJ heavyweights, next Friday will feature a live set from the once mystery producer/silent partner Martin Buttrich. You may not have heard of him, but he’s always been there, kind of like the telephone bidder at auctions, you don’t see them but you know they got some bidding clout. Buttrich has been producing some excellent tracks for a whole host of artists and more recently releasing tracks under his own name. I’m not sure what his live shows are like, but if his productions are anything to go by it should be pure gold.

Fabric is 8 CD Giveaway Winner!!

Well Fabric turned a ripe old 8 last weekend and my what a knees up it was. I managed to get down on Saturday and all three rooms were going off… Cobblestone Jazz were on fine form with their noodley jazz come minimal techno sounds, whilst Ivan Smagghe(ad) and his Jesus antics gave room 2 a right pounding. Terry Francis and Craig Richards were doing an excellent job like they have been doing for all these years. And Ellen Allien just played the most ridiculous bass laden head fuck music I’ve ever heard. And the birthday antics didn’t stop at the door… As I type, I’m enjoying a nice glass of purple panda pop chilled to what must be minus 35 degrees with some fresh Fabric shaped ice cubes from the delightful trays they gave out. Let’s hope we can expect more of the same for years to come.

Who would have thought that the converted cold meat store also known as Fabric would still be here 8 years down the line, especially considering all the other flashy glamorous “super” clubs which have fallen by the wayside after the superclub bubble burst circa year 2000. Sub Level Sessions Resumes Normal Service

Unlike the Royal Mail, the Sub Level Sessions returns this academic year to resume normal service, after a 3 month hiatus taking in the likes of Sonar Festival, Wild in the Country, Exit Festival, various Richie Hawtin gigs, a dissertation and the annual visit to the white isle. The summer has been good, apart from the dissertation writing part, that was just stressful whilst i sat inside and typed, people across the country were having fun at Nottinghill Carnival, SW4 and TDK Cross Central. But apart from that minor blip in august it has been fun.

Anyways, we leave the blustery three months of summer to go head on into another season full of errr... rain, storms, wind, cold and the possible occurrence of snow.... Not to worry! The Sub Level Sessions is back once again for its third and possibly last outing on the "ricketty but not without character" URF Radio.

Its all change this year, the once amateur side kick Luke Simpson takes charge and will now present the show. Whilst the old, tired master? (fool more likely) Chris Wan retires to the bench to supply the online community with the occasional podcast and CD/Event reviews. You can expect from this new audio/visual/textual/online/offline/radiowaved orgy of a two pronged attack the regular plethora of fine guest mixes, new tunes and regular pondering's. All ready in the pipeline is an interview and guest mix from James Murphy & Pat Mahoney, known to most as LCD Soundsystem. They're on the show to promote their newly released FabricLive 37 a disco soul funk rare groove medley which has been making me happy in my car. We've got loads of stuff coming from the Warehouse Project in Manchester such as a massive ticket giveaway to help them kick off another season of humongous rave type affairs. Guest mixes from Sasha and James Zabiela lined up already, as well as possibly one from Italian minimal techno stalwart Marco Carola!! There will be more added as the term goes on, but for now you need to know when we're on.

Sonar Review Pt 2!

Day 2 and my day starts like the opening scene of Apocalypse Now, lying in bed sweltering in the afternoon heat whilst the whirring fan moves warm air around the room, there is the distinct lack of napalm but definitely a presence of a hangover and a really dry mouth. I’m struggling to move for anything… until I realize that C2C are playing the Sonar Village… Who can refuse DMC scratch routines outside in the sun? not me! I lug myself to the bakery pick up my all in one breakfast, lunch and probably dinner filled croissant and head straight to Sonar. With my croissant in one hand, beer in the other, all under the glorious Barcelona sunshine whilst C2C run through some of their World beating set pieces. What better way to take in turntablism at its very finest.

For the hour they were on they did a whole host of individual and team routines, scratching and juggling with the finesse, showmanship and that injection of fun that made them 4 times DMC world champions. Its skits like their interesting rendition of Pulp Fiction’s Misirlou (link) that makes C2C technically brilliant in a turntablist way but also fun to watch and heavens forbid even good to have a dance too.

For Saturday rain was predicted in Barcelona, and in true festival style the heavens opened up for a down pour. Well I say down pour…. Its Barcelona, the slightest specks of rain fell for all of 2 minutes then the clouds parted and it was more of the same sunshine… God I love Barcelona, and only wish we had this climate for such festivals like Glasto and Wild in the Country. So after the initial scares of a downpour I check out some French flavored hip hop stylings in the form of Hocus Pocus. Not really having great command of the French language, I fail miserably at making sense of what’s being sung, rapped or said, but they do sound good and like a lot of French hip hop they retain that element of funk that is so often lost in the aggression from the tower blocks of UK hip hop. But this is what makes Sonar so great, just seeing things you wouldn’t normally see or hear, hearing different influences for different countries of what effectively is the same music.

Probably one of the highlights of Sonar by day over the weekend is the Red Bull Music Lounge. Now over the two days this room was bumping and jumping all day without fail. Its success lays down to the intimate space the Red Bull Lounge occupies with the living room décor as well as the podiums and mezzanine areas, which gives it that illusion of a packed house party vibe with people literally climbing the walls. So get a few people in there, play some beats and you have what is known as a “party in a can”. However this doesn’t mean the DJs weren’t any good. Red Bull had hand picked a selection of DJs that definitely added to the atmosphere, playing the right music, from deep house, to broken beat right through to some tribal and stripped back styles. Although above all this, the entrance to this area was probably the most memorable. I don’t usually get that excited about entering clubs, but the entrance to the Music Lounge was like something out of a film. Being on the top floor and me being lazy, meant the lift was my mode of transport inside the complex. The lift to reach the music lounge was via a incredibly small metal lift, which provided many a good opportunity to be pushed up to some hot Spanish girl’s cleavage. But in my fickleness my attention turns to the doors as you reach the top. The doors slide back, on to what can only be described as an extravagant and rocking house party with a hundred or so people hanging off the rafters. Think that scene in Human Traffic when they hit the after party in the mansion out in the sticks.

Moving back outside to the Village, the Lovemonk Soundsystem had transformed the mostly sit down chilled out affair for the first part of the afternoon into a full swinging party, their disco and house sounds had brought the whole of the Sonar Village to their feet setting up the crowd nicely for Junior Boys. After a few technical difficulties the Junior Boys take to the stage with their electronic pop and soul sound. I was expecting something a bit more housey then it finally clicks that this aren’t the guys from Junior Boys Own but just Junior Boys from Canada. I guess that’s my queue to leave.

Arriving a bit later than expected to the Sonar by Night complex, I had already missed some great acts. Devo who were recommended by many people including the Beastie Boys had already been and gone. The M_nus label showcase with JPLS and Tractile was done and dusted as were Damien Schwartz vs Tadeo and Matthew Dear's Big Hands (and might I add tight leather trousers). Bit annoyed by Sonar for sticking all those acts on together in one go, they could have spread them out a bit, but I guess they do say you snooze you lose. That said I still had time to check out a bit of Dixon and his deep stylings out in the pub. I must say this guy has been on fire recently, transcending the deep house, down tempo and slightly minimal pigeon holes, with probably what is becoming the sound of this year. He warms the Sonar Pub up nicely, getting bottoms moving with his edit of Herbert's Moving Like a Train, a track that he's been pushing a lot on his CDs recently. By the time I leave the SonarPub Dixon has stepped up the tempo to some jacking house and the crowd go with the flow as I scoot off to see Mr Mills.

On my way back over to the SonarClub I swing by the Park to catch the end of the original beatbox grand master, the beatbox innovator and all the other hype he spurts out about himself, althought he does fail to mention he is the nubmer one Jabba The Hutt impersonator with a cap in all his hype. Yes it is of course Rahzel who’s doing his usual thing with DJ in toe JS-1. I don’t think his routine has changed too much over the years, but it’s still entertaining and it does create a good atmosphere all the same, not to mention the guy is very talented. However I try not to enjoy it too much after seeing him hand out his CD after a gig in Notts in exchange for cash. I can’t imagine Rahzel being that hard up? tut tut Rahzel, if only your mother really knew.

Anyways after spitefully seeing Rahzel, I caught Cursor Minor on my way to Jeff Mills. What I thought was a eco warrior who had taken over the stage, was in fact Cursor Minor and his outfit. He had some good beats and some interesting sounds which had me and a lot of other people moving, although I didn’t stay too long to see if Cursor Minor was going to dig a swampy style protest tunnel as the extra terrestrial looking Jeff Mills was on next door.

I've always been a bit skeptical of Jeff Mills, I always hear excellent reports about the man, yet the few times I’ve seen him he's only been ok. I've been told I’ve missed the golden age of Mills, which is a shame, because from the stories I’ve heard it sounded like this man used to rip it up like no other can. Looking past my pessimism, he did play an excellent set, dropping big tracks from now and yester-year such as Ame - Rej and his trademark The Bells, as well as working those 303 beats. Actually when i think back he does have a pretty unique sound and because he's slowed down a bit on the bpm it’s made it a bit more accessible for me I guess. I only wish he would take a little more care of his mixing rather than trying to control too much at the same time. But then I guess that would take away from the Mills experience.

From one techno legend to the next, the Dutch residing Dave Clarke takes to the decks in his usual blazing car crash style. This man just doesn’t hang around. From the get go, he's dropping 100mph tracks whilst scratching, cutting and juggling like only Dave Clarke can. There is one thing a Dave Clarke set is never short of and that’s energy. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he’s definitely worth seeing for a little bit just to see him switch things up so quickly and also to have a little chuckle at some of the ridiculously hard tracks that he drops.

To give my tired legs a break, I go outside next door to see its 1992 again. Altern8 are dropping every single hardcore classic track from back in't day. All the big hitters like Sweet Harmony and Let Me Be Your Fantasy were dropped whilst i precariously made shapes to a time where I was more worried about my packed lunch than raving in a field. My friend who was just slightly older loved it. He had heard all the tracks on Fantazia tape packs but was just too young to experience the 1990’s rave thing. So leaving those guys to it I headed off to see Miss Kitten close the SonarPub arena. She's doing a pretty good job, playing a mix techno, house and quite possibly borderline prog trance as she wails over the top quite affectively. She even went uber minimal with Bodzin and Romboy's The Old Alchemist which rumbled out over the massive rig as the sun slowly rose over the bruised and battered crowd. Again it’s no Hawtin 2005 closing, but she’s not far off. Come 7am I’m cutting my losses and making a dash for the buss where there is already a sizable crowd scrambling to get a seat. The bus heads past the infamous Sonar carry on Anti-Sonar where hundreds of people clambering through the hole in the fence, looks a bit mental in there, think I’ll save that experience for another year.

Sonar Report Pt 1.

Well what a weekend… 3 days, 2 nights and a plethora of visual and audio entertainment makes me a tired bunny… but my, what a happy tired and slightly sun burnt panda eyed bunny I am…. And the cause for my worn out but happy state? It is of course Sonar!

Arriving late Thursday night meant missing the first day of festivities and therefore missing such musical delights as James Holden and a rare appearance of Ricardo Villalobos’ laptop supergroup Narod Niki. However being in Spain means the clubs don’t get going until late, so there were plenty of places to get the party started such as Get Physical’s label party at Razmatazz or Soma at La Terraza. That said I got stuck in a bar and got drunk until the early hours followed by some late night la ramblas delights!

After Thursday’s poor attempt at reaching anything interesting I pulled myself out of bed nice and early into the glorious Barcelona sunshine and headed straight for Sonar Day. Held in the architecturally magnificent CCCB centre which fused old and modern styles, and for this weekend only, a massive music/art event plopped in the middle of it. Donning my shades and my new favourite Addidas Sonar branded bag I headed for the Sonar Village to take back the sun, laidback hip hop and of course a beer. Now as is the usual case with Sonar by day I tend to go minus a programme and never really figure out when or who was on(I have enough trouble figuring out where and who I am). This year was more of the same. I saw some excellent hip hop djs scratch it out. Out back in the marquee I saw some great collaborations from a variety of instruments and electronic music. Taking a break from the daytime sun, I took a look inside. Checked out some of the installation art, and had a play with all the interactive video stuff in there. Some crazy things they can do, such as super imposing alien like features on to you (Shadow Monsters 1, Shadow Monsters 2). After that potential freakout hazard it was time to make a sharp exit to find some beach parties down on Mar Bella beach.

So after an afternoon of milling round Sonar by day and a timeout to recharge for the night’s festivities, we headed out to the Sonar by Night complex a massive exhibition centre in the middle of an industrial estate a few miles outside of Barcelona. To imagine the size is probably not possible, I could give you statistics on how many jumbo jets and football fields fit inside, but you just cant comprehend how big it is until you get there. The Sonar folks do a good job of kitting the place out. Big video screens and speaker stacks all around with surprisingly good acoustics, so you never miss a piece of the action wherever you are in the huge cauldron of people. The night’s events are spread across 4 arenas, SonarClub which is the daddy of all exhibition halls plays host to the big headliner acts. Then there’s the Sonar Pub and Sonar Lab two large outdoor concrete areas followed by the Sonar Park the smaller but just as monstrous and confusing indoor hall with an outdoor name.

Friday night and the most obvious port of call was to see the Beastie Boys. They burst onto the scene with a huge anticipating crowd that erupts into probably one of the most electric atmosphere’s I’d ever seen. I’ve never been the closest follower of the Beastie Boys and their material, but they put on an excellent live show; dropping in those familiar nuggets I recognise whilst pushing some of their new instrumental sounds with the odd punk and thrash out moments together with the legendary and World class Mixmaster Mike stringing the flow together allowing the Beasties to move between tracks seamlessly using famous old skool hip hop beats and the odd scratch skit here and there. Truly a marvel to watch! Their set peaked to an end with a Mixmaster Mike 3 MCs and 1 DJ scratch skit into the hugely popular Intergalactic allowing the crowd including myself to blurt out things like “style…profile….”, “I like my sugar with coffee and cream” and “let the beat… drooooooooop” whilst doing b-boy style poses and hand movements. Definitely a scene that would have a load of old skool b-boys turning in their graves, but entertaining all the same!

After being blown away by the Beasties it was time to check out some of the Ed Banger stable. With their increasing portfolio of talent, one of their brightest dj talents DJ Mehdi takes to the stage, dishing up everything from party hip hop laced with electro beats, some chopped up heavy house switch sounds, mixed in with some of that “nu-rave” stuff whilst throwing in a good measure of party just to be sure... Definitely clean unpretentious fun, with classic gems such as Inner Citys – Good Life to make you throw those old skool shapes.

Caught the start of Uffie with her Miami bass sound to body pop to, but of course she had to make way for the traditional Richie Hawtin Sonar set. This year Mr Hawtin only occupied a 2 hour slot at 3am as well as being located inside the SonarClub to devastate Barcelona; which is a shame because I was hoping for something as equally devastating to Sonar 2005 where he legendarily closed the Sonar Pub one bright Sunday morning. And I think because of this, his set was only enjoyable and not outstanding, with me expecting something more magical which I guess you can only achieve by being outside, with a few thousand other people and the sun rising whilst I cling to a bottle of warm vodka lemon fanta and have my guts resonated by some monster stack of speakers. However with a hint of disappointment and as much as I wanted to re-live a memory, I still boogied my ass off to his techno sounds, thoroughly enjoying every bass drop and robot echo effect thing he does so well. He also dropped Plastikman –Spastik which sounded incredible on the Sonar sound system and made me wish I had been in the thick of the crowd instead of lingering round the edges looking for a drink. Being a 2 hour set Richie had come and gone like one of those hookers you get off La Ramblas late at night. I felt used and empty but slightly satisfied, but this did allow for a little run around for my tiring legs to check out Digitalism pumping out their electronic sounds and everyone’s favorite rubber faced German Timo Mass. Followed by a circle back to pick up flagging mates and to see the end of SMD or Simian Mobile Disco for those not on the trendy Nu-Rave scene. SMD were pretty entertaining, however I had scene there set numerous times around the UK on their recent tour so I decided to call it a day and struggled for the buses to get back to my not so comfy hostel bed.

CD Review - Ralph Lawson: Fabric 33

The Fabric series descends upon us once again this March. This month the CD compilation is headed up by long time Leeds and Back to Basics resident Ralph Lawson. Ralph’s sound is the result of a long and diverse career in dance music. His sound stands somewhere between electronic, deep house and live elements with splashes of funk, disco and acid. His productions with his 20:20 Soundsystem project and the output of his label 20:20 Vision is evident of this and this Fabric 33 mix is no exception. Rather than wonder down the minimal route like so many of his peers, Ralph has kept true to his sound, which is probably the reason why he’s been around for so long. This mix touches on all the classic Lawson bases. The live funk elements are noted on the 20:20 Soundsystem productions High and Radio by Drum Cult. Deep house is covered by the excellent sounds of Dennis Ferrer with Transitions and Brett Johnson Everything’s Electric. Hints of classic acid swirls are present with Joakim’s Drum Trax and the Tejada remix of Marc Romboy’s Jigsaw. So many brilliant selections, finely blended together by such an experienced dj, showing us that there is some brightness in and amongst all the darkness of the electronic sound.

Hypercolour Launch with Glimpse and Excentric Showcase Part II with Fergie

My my, another week has passed and the weekend is here again... Last week we played host to an excellent little mix from Henry Von the resident of new label and night Excentric. We were supposed to play a mix from Fergie too, but due to some technical difficulties *ahem* yousendit *cough* we couldnt air the mix in time, for the second time.... However I've now got the mix, its on my computer and will be burnt to CD shortly, so there should be no stopping us from finally broadcasting a Fergie mix.

But first up we have a recorded live set from London duo Glimpse, whos excellent new "Talking To Girls EP" which has seen support from Magda on her Dancing Machine compilation, was the first release last week on the new label Hypercolour. Describing their sound as "future house and techno", we're very excited about this new label, with releases and remixes set from Jamie Jones, Justin Maxwell and Sebastian Bouchet; Hypercolour look set to start 2007 with a bang.....

So a fun packed show this week, with Glimpse and Fergie on the bill. We've also got some new tracks from Funk D'void and Phil Kieran plus a bit of history with all the recent Black Dog re-releases :o)

M.AN.D.Y - "At The Controls" review

German duo M.A.N.D.Y from the Get Physical stable follows James Holden in contining the “At The Controls” mix series, providing a 2 cd mix covering a wide spectrum of electronic dance music. With James setting the bar high, M.A.N.D.Y have a tough act to follow. With many options they need to consider. Do they mix something very leftfield and eclectic? Do they do the club experience? Do they make it a sit down and listen experience? James Holden went for the eclectic, sit down and listen approach. With this release M.AN.D.Y go for the club experience on CD1 with eclectic sit down and listen on CD2.

CD1 starts off mellow but with that typical Get Physical groove which is minimal in style but very musical. Djuma Soundsystem’s massive track Les Djinns making its first of two appearances on this CD is a perfect example of that Get Physical sound. Things pick up pace with classic track Collage by Spain’s Alex Under adding to the techno influence. CD1 shows off M.A.N.D.Y’s ability to craft club sets to suit different times of the night, moving easily from warm up to peak time to the more tripped out 9am affair taking in a little bit of Chicago along the way with Stacey Pullen’s mix of Catatonic by Kenny Larkin. Other highlights on CD1 include Matthew Jonson’s Sub Atomic on Underline and the Jennifer Cardini & Shonky’s excellent eerie, trippy remix of Mile Caro & Franck Garcia’s Far Away.

CD2 begins like a Back To Mine CD with an interesting Bond/Goldfinger-esque start, followed by some down tempo folk influenced electronica. Its all a bit bizarre in comparison to CD1. Things start getting back into familiar territory as Claude Von Stroke Who’s Afraid of Detroit bubbles in and sets off a flow of dark and moody tracks from the likes of Villalobos and Scsi-9 which slowly build in to Ruede Hagelstein’s mix of Chikinki’s Assassinator 13. The second CD has taken its time to burrow under my skin, but like Holden’s “At The Controls” attempt, its one of those that just grow and grows until you can put it down. This CD just works, with a great pulsating groove throughout and is perfect for those after hour sessions where you just don’t know where you are and have spent the last few hours intrigued by your own hands….

Silicone Soul : Save + Our + Souls Album Review

Silcone Soul return with their 3rd album of what they do best... Atmospheric, dubby electronic tinged house music. 'Damascene Moments' opens the album up, setting the mood excellently with a driving dub synth bassline and then furthermore picking up pace with the hypnotic melodies of the flute on 'The Snakecharmer'. 'Bad Machines' and forthcoming single ‘The Pact’ takes the album through to peak time with its growling acid basslines and piano loop breakdown sure to get any discerning clubber moving. And ‘Dreaming Again’ brings the soul and funk influence to the forefront with a track that wouldn’t sound out of place on the Jackie Brown soundtrack. The closing track ‘Eloge De L’Amour’ winds down with a funk fuelled bass guitar and long electric guitar stabs, tinged with electronic noises.

This album has definitely been keeping me entertained in the car for the past few weeks and is particularly suited to those long drives during an end of summer sunset. And I am intrigued in how this album will translate into a live show.
